THREE FASTS THAT CHANGED HISTORY
I want you to see what fasting actually does when God’s people get serious about it. These are not inspirational stories. These are battle reports.
Jehoshaphat — 2 Chronicles 20. Three nations were marching against Judah. The army was impossible to defeat. Jehoshaphat did not call a war council. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. God’s response? ‘The battle is not yours, but God’s. Position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD.’ The enemy — a massive coalition of armies — destroyed themselves. Judah collected the spoil for three days. The fast turned a crisis into a collection.
Esther — Esther 4:16. When the decree to annihilate an entire people was signed, Esther did not move politically. She moved spiritually. ‘Fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day.’ After the fast, she walked into the presence of the king — uninvited, at the risk of her life — and favor was extended. The fast broke the authority of the death decree.
Acts 13 — the first mission movement. The leaders of the church at Antioch were ministering and fasting when the Holy Spirit spoke: ‘Separate to me Barnabas and Saul.’ They fasted again, prayed, laid hands on them — and released the first deliberate mission thrust into the Gentile world. Most of our New Testament epistles flow from what that one fast launched. The fast sent the Gospel to nations that would have never heard it.
Matthew 17:21, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
There are things in your life — in your family, in your body, in your finances, in your spiritual atmosphere — that will not move by ordinary means. Jesus was not speaking of some demons. He was describing a category of bondage that is only broken through fasting. You already know what I am talking about. You have prayed. You have believed. You have stood. But this kind requires more. This kind requires the acceptable fast.
WHAT FASTING DOES — THE FULL PICTURE
Paula’s years of teaching on fasting have uncovered thirteen distinct categories of breakthrough that the Scripture assigns specifically to consecrated fasting. Let me give you the picture:
Fasting looses the bands of wickedness — the besetting habits, the cycles you cannot seem to break on your own (Isaiah 58:6; Matthew 17:21). It breaks the grip of poverty and creates an opening for supernatural provision (Joel 2:14-16; Job 23:12). It solves problems and undoes heavy burdens — Ezra fasted before crossing dangerous terrain, and God gave them safe passage (Ezra 8:23).
Fasting draws you into the presence and intimacy of God in a way that ordinary prayer cannot match (Matthew 9:14-15). It opens revelation — when Paul fasted three days after his Damascus Road encounter, scales literally fell from his eyes (Acts 9:9,18). It releases supernatural power — Jesus returned from His 40-day fast in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:14).
Fasting breaks the power of the enemy over your household — the story of Cornelius in Acts 10 shows how a fasting, praying man became the gateway for an entire household’s salvation. It brings ministry gifts to life, releases divine direction for leadership, activates Kingdom mission (Acts 13), and shatters the spirit of grief — Hannah fasted and wept before God, and God opened her womb (1 Samuel 1).
In short: fasting does not move God. It moves you. It removes the noise, clears the clutter of the flesh, and positions you to receive what God has already prepared.
