Remember, Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “a three chord strand is not easily broken.” Today, we are continuing our series: “When You Pray, When You Fast, and When You Give.” These are the tools to win in life!

Today – I specifically want us to learn to use the tool of prayer that 2 Corinthians 10:4 says, “Have Divine Power To Demolish Strongholds…” The Strongman is one who controls a stronghold: a place or territory under his influence.

Jesus said WHEN you pray, fast and give, Your Father will reward (or deliver) you!

Ecclesiastes 4:12, “a three chord strand is not easily broken…”

Matthew 6:1-19 (NIV), “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

God declares when we give, pray and fast He will reward us!

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (NIV), “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish (GR = portheo = to destroy, lay waste, to overthrow) strongholds”.

Identifying the Strongman:

  • The strong man is one who controls a stronghold – a place or territory under his influence.
  • This territory is heavily fortified and impregnable.
  • In order to locate the strongman you must see things as they really are.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 says, “the god of this world (the infernal kingdom) has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe so that they cannot see and accept the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ.”

Hebrews 11:3 indicates there are worlds – a spiritual world and a physical world. Things which are seen are a manifestation of things which are unseen. So we should be able to look at what is seen and perceive what is not seen. We do this by Faith according to Hebrews 11:1.

  • One kingdom is temporal, one is eternal (2 Cor. 4:18).
  • The strong man is a satanic personality in charge or responsible for the stronghold (2 Cor. 10:4).
  • The light of God’s Word – Illumination exposes the strong man.
  • His power is in deception and the lack of light – darkness.

As long as Satan’s strongholds are concealed, the strongman is safe and he can operate without being identified. Once he is identified, The Word can be used to defeat him and once he is defeated his stronghold can be pulled down and the goods or spoils can be collected.

Under a domain or authority of the strong man there may be other spirits operating, but you must locate the ruling spiritto uncover, expose, unseat and BIND the strong man.

For example, Bitterness is a ruling spirit, and under its domain or authority it has other spirits namely:

  • Resentment,
  • Hatred,
  • Murder,
  • Unforgiveness,
  • Temper,
  • Violence,
  • Anger

If you bind resentment, but don’t bind the spirit of Bitterness, the ruling spirit, the problem will not be solved. You will not be able to penetrate the stronghold and release the spoils of bounty such as joy, peace, love, etc. But, on the other hand, if you bind the Spirit of Bitterness, the ruling spirit, the other sub-spirits can easily be confronted and destroyed releasing access to the spoils.

Matthew 12:29 summarized: “You must first bind the strong man before you can enter the stronghold and gain access to the goods.”

Strongholds are:

  • Personal or corporate
  • Heavily fortified places or territories
  • Geographical locations, areas of influence in institutions or organizations, areas on influence in families, or areas of influence in certain segments of the lives of individuals
  • Daniel 10:10-14, 18-21
