Growing up, I wasn’t raised in the church, and I didn’t know anything about Jesus. I spent the first 18 years of my life learning manmade cultural traditions and common sense, while trying to make sense of the trauma I had endured. Having survived my childhood, I was now a fledgling adult, barely 18 and looking for something, driven by a void inside me that I didn’t understand. I was trying to “write-over” my past as if it had never happened.

Despite succeeding in school, excelling in gymnastics, winning over plenty of friends and putting on a happy, fun-loving façade, the pain inside always returned, and I could not escape this gnawing inside for something more, both of which grew greater with every passing day.

And right then, God placed His message for me into the hands of an unlikely person. I was transfixed. I thought that no one could see my past and my pain because I had stuffed it so deep, never sharing it with anyone. I thought I blended in with everyone else, and maybe I almost did – but God saw me.

“You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.” Psalm 139:1-4

God knows your every thought; He knows which way you are going to choose, whether you are going to go right or go left. God knows what you are going to say before you say it. He knows how to send someone into your life at the right time with the right words to cause you to drop to your knees and surrender to His love. God will show His messenger supernaturally what they need to know to reach you –by the power of His Holy Spirit.

“I’m sitting on a faded couch in the small living room when Dean introduces me to his mom’s brother, Uncle Butch, who’s visiting from several states away. He’s in his forties, and when I first greet him, he looks at me with this piercing glance as if he knows something I don’t. ‘I know what you’re going through, Paula,’ he tells me. ‘I can see all your pain.’

No, you don’t. Nobody knows what I’m going through…Uncle Butch gives me a gentle smile. ‘I’ve got the answers to your questions. The solution to your pain and problems.’

There’s something about this man and his earnest tone that draws me in, making me curious and willing to talk…In just a few moments, he begins to talk about God and starts unpacking truths, concepts and ideas I’ve never heard about in my entire life...The words and atmosphere around us and around this moment all seem very important. I’m mesmerized, especially the more Uncle Butch reads from the Bible, talks to me, explains things, and seems to know exactly who I am. I’m invited to close my eyes while Uncle Butch prays for me…

I don’t know the technical term for this supernatural event that is happening right this moment. I can’t fathom something like my own salvation or deliverance. I’ve never heard of being born again and don’t comprehend what it means to have a spiritual awakening. All I know is I believe what Uncle Butch is telling me. And I ask God to forgive me for all those sins I didn’t know I had even committed. To wash me clean. To deliver me through His son, Jesus Christ.

So many heavy memories I’ve tried to erase feel like they are falling off me. Saying I feel lighter sums it up in such a cliched way, but it’s true. I feel like I am floating.

When I finally leave several hours later, I step outside into an entirely different world.
I see colors. Bright, clear, varied streaks of vibrant color. Sure, the clouds have dissipated and the sun is setting in the west, but that’s not the reason things look different. I realize I’ve lived my entire life seeing the outside world in black and white, and now I can see the green glowing in the grass and the blue blushing in the sky.”

Somehow, nothing had changed, but EVERYTHING had changed.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation;
old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

2 Corinthians 5:17

On the day of salvation, you are a completely “new creation.” The word “new” in the Greek here is an adjective that means “new, fresh, and of uncertain affinity.” You’re new, fresh, and no natural person knows where you came from or where you’re going.

“Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." John 3:6-8 (NIV)

The Word “creation” in the Greek means a “building, creation, creature, ordinance” and is from a root word meaning “original formation.” When you put your faith in Jesus Christ, in an instant, you are translated into His kingdom, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you (Revelation 3:20) and you become a new, fresh creation reflecting God’s original intention for who you are to be, and where you are going, no one but God knows. You are restored into the person God intended you to be before He even formed you in your mother’s womb. The grass is green and the sky is blue.

Now that you are this new creation, you have eyes that really see, ears that really hear, and a heart with a new understanding. The sky is blue, and the grass is green. You are now in right-standing with Father God, the One True God, the undefeatable God who created the earth and the universe, loves you unconditionally and has amazing plans for your life. The grass is green and the sky is blue!

“… they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” Matthew 13:15-17 (NIV)

We live in a time that was only prophesied about in the Old Testament, before Jesus came to the earth. We have access to the throne of grace any time, any day, by simply asking in Jesus’ name. Now that the seed of God is within you, who is He restoring you to become?

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2 (NIV)

There were still some things I needed to be freed from on the day of my salvation, but now I had the answers in my hands. I wasn’t yet what I was going to be, but now I had a way to get there.

A small glimpse of the weight of destiny that God had for me, like a preview, was birthed into my spirit, although my conscious mind only knew what was in front of me. I was on a journey towards something amazing and wonderful, if I stayed in alignment with Him. The seed of God had been planted within me, and the person in Christ who God had destined for me to become was born and restored that day 35 years ago. The grass was green and the sky was blue.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:13 (NIV)

If you received Jesus as your Savior, and you believe He came to earth in the flesh, died on an old rugged cross, was resurrected from the dead, and now sits on the throne at the right hand of God the Father -then not only do you have eternal life… you are a new, fresh creation reflecting God’s original intention, and where you are going, no one but God knows. You have the right to become a child of God.

By learning and living the Word of God, by His grace and through faith in Him, by obedience to the Holy Spirit, who will you become? The seed of God is within you – how far will you let Him take you? Take the limits off of God! Who has God destined you to be? What gifts has God locked within you?

If you are in Christ, you are a new creation, with new eyes, ears and heart – what will you do with them? Go forth in the joy of the Lord into your destiny! The grass is green and the sky is blue…and there are no limits in Him!

Pray this with me:
“Father, in the name of Jesus, I surrender my life to you. I believe Jesus Christ came to earth in the flesh, died on the cross for my sins and was resurrected from the dead, and I confess right now that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me for my sins and cleanse me of every iniquity that separates me from You. I ask You, Jesus, to come into my life and make me a new creation in You. Thank You for the gift of eternal life, and that now I have the power to become the child of God you created me to be before the foundation of the earth. I praise You, Father, in the name of Jesus, that there is now nothing between us, nothing separating us, and I ask You to help me follow You every day into the incredible destiny You have created just for me. I thank You, Father, that now my eyes see, my ears hear, and my heart has understanding. I don’t know where You will send me, but I know You will show me the way to go! I praise You for the breaking of chains and the joy of salvation! In Jesus’ mighty name…Amen.”
