What You Can Do During Hard Times . . . PRAY!
By now, I believe we all understand that times are tough. Not only do we continually hear the litany of woes that America faces, our lives are personally impacted by rising unemployment, failing mortgages, an anemic economy, out-of-control healthcare costs, a polluted environment, and unrestrained greed What can you do when it appears there is nothing you can do? Realize that there are at least four things – power points – that you can put into action immediately. I have four points to share with you. I will share two in this article and two more in the next article. These points will guide you through hard times.
1. Count Your Blessings, Now!
Focus on what you have, not on what you do not have. Count your blessings, now. You will be surprised how blessed you really are. One of the most important blessings to count is that you are alive! As long as you are breathing, your life can improve. Make up your mind to see the good in your life and trust God to change the rest. When you count your blessings, you create an attitude of gratitude within yourself. As a result, you become more productive at work and more peaceful at home. It is easy to complain during trying times, but it takes courage and hope to believe that things will get better. Go ahead, start now and count your blessings.
2. Have Faith, Not Fear
It has been said that fear is false evidence appearing real. Fear comes in many shapes and sizes. According to news reports, 40% of Americans are in fear of the failing economy. In the book, Julius Caesar, by Philip Freeman, Caesar’s greatest challenge was not his enemies (and he had many), but it was stemming the fear felt among his troops. In his day, the Roman army was known as the greatest military force in the ancient world, yet, he knew that if his army began to show fear and doubt, every battle would be lost. So, Caesar reminded his men of the victories they had won in the past and encouraged them to keep fighting for the good of the Roman empire. He also demonstrated his courage by fighting on the front lines with them instead of commanding from afar.
Now is the time to bolster your faith in God and believe that He will help you and your family. Take charge over your fear and remind yourself of how God has helped you through past challenges. Keep fighting for the good of your family, community, and city. I want to reassure you that there are thousands of people in the Houston Metropolitan area who are praying for the full recovery of the American economy. I have the utmost faith that the economy will recover. Pray and have faith in God!
