United We Stand

A New Teaching Article On World Improvement

This month, we are focusing on World Improvement – taking our efforts to serve and evangelize the lost outside the four walls of the church. We have talked about the fact that as believers, God will highlight all that we do and elevate us so that everyone in our life sees what we are doing in Him!

“No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.” Luke 11:33

A candlestick elevates the candle so that the light shines to a larger circumference than would have been possible without the candlestick; a candlestick is a platform. In the same way, the Lord elevates you with a platform so that more people see the light than would have been possible. It is imperative that we know we are the only Bible some people may ever read. Knowing this, how can we bring the glory of God to people outside the four walls of the church?

In my last article, I discussed the ways we can touch the lives of the people around us on an individual level. It’s so important to have your own individual ministry for Christ on a personal level. How can we have life and life more abundantly if we’re not using the gifts that God placed within us? Our gifts, when released into the atmosphere, will minister to us and those around us. Many of the people who see your “light” will be receptive to hearing the saving message of Jesus Christ, even if you haven’t said a word.

Another way we can bring Jesus Christ outside the four walls of the church is on a corporate level. The power contained in the corporate body of believers is much greater than the sum of all its parts! There is nothing more powerful than an organized, unified body of believers who have a common purpose together. We are the body of Jesus Christ on earth! There are multitudes of opportunities for you to be a part of something in the church. There are prison ministries, children’s ministries, singles ministries, married couples ministries, street ministries, clothes ministries, food drives, nursing home ministries, home groups, and so many more places for you to bring your gifts and talents!

Getting involved with ministries in your local church is an extremely effective way of touching the lives of lost and hurting people. Not only can God use you to touch others and add power to His body on earth, some of life’s greatest contacts and comrades are met serving corporately side by side! Serving God in a corporate setting is powerful for everyone involved.

Your Heart’s Desire

Take time to think things over. What types of human suffering moves your heart the most? Where is your heart’s desire to serve? Where is the need? These are the questions you should ask yourself. Some of us would know those answers right off the top of their head! Others may need more time to investigate. Maybe you feel called to children’s ministry, to leave an impression on the children whose parents are soaking in the Word of God. Maybe you sense God pulling you to prison ministry, to reach the unreachable. Or maybe you find that teenagers listen to you, so you know you can take part in youth ministry without being deemed “uncool.” Find the ministry that best matches your heart. Commit to a conservative number of things at first, so that you don’t find yourself over-committed!

Discern and Reflect

When we give careful thought to our commitments, we are able to count the cost and know whether we have the time and energy to complete our commitment. Committing to things gradually rather than all at once will curtail “emotional” commitment, and get you introduced to the miracles that can happen when we serve corporately!

Unity

Unity is a crucial element of a ministry; it is a kingdom principle that breeds power. It is like the glue that holds everyone together. God puts a special blessing on unity. Unity can be thought of as “harmony or agreement between people or groups; oneness of heart and mind.” When we can get into oneness of mind and heart, we have tremendous power against forces of darkness. When we have committed to something we have given careful thought to, and people sense our joy and excitement, we bring a freshness to the ministry, causing everyone within it to become more “one!” This dynamic of reliability and enthusiasm adds to the unity of a ministry; it keeps everyone glued together. Use the power of agreement to solidify the ministry you choose to serve in. What the people building the tower of Babel used for evil (oneness of mind and heart), we can use for God’s glory!

This month, we are mobilizing people to evangelize outside the four walls of the church. One effective and powerful way of doing this is by serving God in a corporate setting – i.e. through a ministry in the church. This is because the power contained in a unified corporate body of believers is much greater than the sum of its parts! When choosing a ministry to be involved in, pay attention to what moves your heart, the needs of the church, and count the cost of being involved. When you begin to bring Christ outside the four walls by serving in a corporate setting, be a contributor to the unity in the ministry! We do this by walking in agreement with others in the ministry. When a corporate ministry is unified, the synergism that is created brings power to reach out and serve those in need! This month, I want to stir your heart to bring the message of Christ outside the four walls of the church in a way that activates your gifts and talents! And remember….united we stand!
