And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth,
and was subject unto them:
but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature,
and in favour with God and man.
Jesus increased in wisdom, stature and favor as He grew. As you and I grow in Christ, we mature, too. Favor is the divine current that takes you from your present season to your future destiny. You and I need God’s favor to lay hold of our destiny in Christ. We need the favor of God to take us to our “Promised Land”!
One of the characteristics of Jesus’ growth we should model in order to manifest favor with God and man is wisdom. What is wisdom?
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.”
A wise man has the combination of wisdom and understanding at work in him. Wisdom is as infinite as God himself. As we increase in wisdom, wisdom increases in us. Let’s examine the first portion of the text above, Proverbs 9:1-9, to gain insight into godly wisdom.
“Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine;
she hath also furnished her table.
3She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city, 4Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding,
she saith to him, 5Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
7He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame:
and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser:
teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.”
In the text above, we see that there are seven “pillars” of wisdom. According to the World English Dictionary, a pillar is an “an upright structure of stone, brick, metal, etc., that supports a superstructure…” There are 7 kingdom principles that uphold the superstructure of godly wisdom. Right now, we are only going to talk about the first two, but remember – godly wisdom attracts favor. Let’s unpack 2 of the most important of these 7 components: the fear of the Lord and discernment.
The fear of the Lord.
This is foundational to all other pillars. Jesus in Matthew 10:28 – 31(below) said not to fear those who can kill the body and then after that have nothing more they can do. He said instead, fear God, who has the power and authority to exact judgment upon all. Jesus is talking about the holy fear that comes from true faith and holy reverence.
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
The fear of the Lord is a reverential awe of God that comes from knowing who He is, and can also mean “exceeding dread”. When you really believe that God is who He says He is, you fear Him only – not man. Sometimes judgment will visit to establish “the fear of the Lord” in a person’s (or many people’s) life. “Fear of the Lord” is also being afraid of missing His way.
Discernment iskeen perception or judgment (according to World English Dictionary). It is to understand the plans, intent, thought or motive. Discernment goes beyond the obvious to hear the spirit behind things that are said or done.
Discernment flows out of the fear of the Lord.People who do not walk in the fear of the Lord become calloused in their ability to discern. Self – dependent people are likely to lose the fear of the Lord, causing the sharpness of discernment to be lost.
Don’t mistake suspicion for discernment. Suspicion is the act of believing something to be wrong, false, guilty, counterfeit, etc. with little or no evidence. Suspicion is evidence of a deficit of the fear of the Lord, and/or other problems in the spirit and/or soul.
When you exercise godly wisdom, God pours His favor upon you! God is pleased when His servants are wise. Godly wisdom brings prosperity and causes His favor to be poured upon your life in abundance! I know you are going to experience the favor of Almighty God! You are called for such a time as this, but the question is: can you handle what He is about to pour out? When you walk in godly wisdom, have a healthy fear of the Lord and possess discernment, you can be trusted with the blessings only He can give! God bless you!
